CA 10 – Via del Carso [Friuli-Venezia-Giulia / Slovenia]

From Trieste to Lignano Sabbiadoro

Grado e Aquileia – laguna e storia

The first region to welcome cyclists on the Ciclovia Adriatica is Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, a borderland where the journey begins with a promise of adventure. You start in Trieste, an elegant and windy city, easily reached by train, by plane or by car. Here the route crosses the city first, then guides you onto the Giordano Cottur greenway, a green ribbon that climbs gently to the border with Slovenia at Draga, with an elevation gain of about 400 metres.

From this point the journey changes pace: you leave the city behind and cycle along secondary roads and quiet paths until you reach Prosecco. Near Opicina there is a short stretch of main road to tackle carefully, but the road soon quietens again. You detour inland through small villages such as Sgonico, Sales and San Pelagio, then cross into Slovenia, where the road becomes a succession of gentle curves through forests and typical plateau provincial roads.

In Slovenia the route passes through Gorjansko and Brestovica, two villages immersed in greenery. Then, with one last push, you re-enter Italy through Jamiano, Doberdò del Lago and Ronchi dei Legionari, territories shaped by history and nature. At Monfalcone you rejoin the FVG2 cycleway, heading towards Marina Julia. After crossing the river Isonzo with care (a short stretch on a main road), the road slides towards Grado, between lagoons and the scent of sea salt.

From Grado you can easily reach Aquileia and Cervignano del Friuli via well-signed cycle paths. The route then diverts onto country roads, safer and more pleasant than the main road, until you reach Marano Lagunare. From here, between secondary roads and unsurfaced tracks immersed in nature, you finally arrive at Lignano Sabbiadoro, where Friuli bids the traveller farewell with its long golden beach.

From Lignano Sabbiadoro, you can continue along the Ciclovia Adriatica, crossing the bridge over the Tagliamento at Bevazzana, or reach the nearest train station at Latisana by following the FVG6 route or the GiraTagliamento along both banks of the Tagliamento.

Please note: in some sections the route deviates from the Bicitalia BI6 track, following variants considered safer with fewer stretches on main roads.
